The Sea is a novel of recollection and regret, as aging art historian Max Morden returns to the boarding house by the sea where he spent a
memorable summer as an adolescent. As he recalls that summer which he spent with the Grace family, he also looks back at the more recent death
of his wife and how he had been unable to respond to her illness.
