Ghost Estates

Okay, I said at the start that it wouldn't all be pretty but I found myself wanting to share the beauty of my country too much so I didn't take many pictures of the empty shops for sale or run down housing estates. There are hundreds of unfinished housing estates dotted around the Irish countryside. In some of them only a few houses are occupied so those who have bought homes there are living beside half finished houses without proper lighting or roads. In this case, only the foundation for the roads which would have lead to the estate have been laid. Even the advertising sign for the estate has fallen down and now the grass and weeds are reclaiming the land.

It may be sad, but the light and composition are beautiful Mairead!! Nice shot! V

So sad but it's beautiful in its own way...

Wonderful composition and light in this image! I know that Ireland is not alone in seeing signs of economic hardship. Wonderful image. V++

Still lots of building going on here. Fort Bend County (where I live) is still one of the top growth areas in the U.S. People are moving here from all over the world, especially Asia.

Maybe not that pretty, but it definitely makes a great picture.

I understand about the unfinished housing estates in Ireland. We saw so many new buildings going up in 1999 and wondered how long it could last.

I could cry for those who have lost so much through no fault of their own...

I feel really sorry for the people who are living there, it must be akin to being in a slum. Hopefully things will pick up.
A very telling shot.

We had an area near my house like that but it has now been picked up with building again. I think this is something all too familiar with so many all over the world.

Tough economic times everywhere you go. Your image has captured the bleak mood.

Its a captivating picture though. Although I'm not sure who is to blame for the situation, the government who allowed it, the banks who exploited it, or the people who were greedy and looking to make a fast buck on the rise in property values.

It's a beautiful photo though. I love the fence and the way it is silhouetted against sky and field. I think the entire world is having economic problems now and people are becoming poorer. V.

It's both sad and worrying that the economy is in such a state. That fence makes a very good subject for an image.
