An Uphill Struggle

Ireland still has a young population but the future is bleak for those leaving school or college with youth unemployment at almost 30%. Many young people are opting to continue their education or to emigrate as job opportunities are limited due to the on-going recession.
Picture taken at graduation day at our local college, Dundalk Institute of Technology. The college attracts overseas students, mostly from China, anxious to learn English, as well as students from thoughout the north east region.

I've met two recent immigrants from Ireland in the last month. A plumber working on house renovations and an IT guy working for a bank. I told them they were part of the same sad story my wife's family experienced some 150 years ago. It worked out well for them in the end though.

lot of Irish are migrating to Australia, they can earn a lot of money in the mining
but recently I read that Ireland is back in the lift again..so immigrating will slow down

insightful representation of their sad predicament...somehow progress has stalled, and the boom and bust cycles are becoming more extreme..emigration is no guarantee either, with financial turmoil so widespread..
