Dancing Queen

Most Irish girls go to dancing classes at some stage or other. Being blessed with two
left feet, my dancing career never got further than ' hop one, two, three, back one, two, three'.
My cousin was a talented dancer and I can recall her going to Irish dancing competitions,
her hair in ringlets having slept with rollers in the night before, and wearing a beautifully
decorated dance costumes.
No doubt Irish dance costumes are subject to the whims of fashion and this one has ended
up in an antique shop in Carlingford. It would make a wonderful souvenir for some American
to bring home for a daughter or granddaughter, especially now that shows such as 'Riverdance' and
'Lord of the Dance' have made Irish dancing famous the world over.

Brings back memories for me of a student I once had who was also training in Irish Dancing... her mother would bring the wonderful costume along to the lesson to show me, they are definitely a work of art!

our 8 yr old granddaughter was taught a little by her teacher last year...she has gone on to drama classes so my dream of a little dancer I fear has passed....love those costumes!!

What a wonderful design on this dress, it must have taken an age to stitch whether by machine or hand!.

I was also born with 2 left feet! Can't dance to save my life!
Charming costume Mairead, but would only an American purchase this as a souvenir?

I can't dance either. Thanks to lessons from a professional, my husband and I can muster a waltz when we hear some good Texan music, but that is as good as it will ever get. Lovely costume here!! Love the sign too!

rivetting threadwork and sumptuous colours..and what a character in the background..Riverdance had a role in keeping Irish music on the international radar, for a while, yet that same music doesn't hold a candle to that of Ireland's greatest contemporary musicians...Altan, Tommy Peoples, Paddy Keenan, Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill, Frankie Gavin, Sharon Shannon, Martin Hayes, Lunasa, John McSherry, or Karan Casey....their playing would soon get the young lassies dancing...V

As long as you didn't play with it before you "payed" for it. And my dancing ability is similar; I might be OK at the Zombie Dance Festival but that would be it.
The angle of the light picks up the embroidery nicely on this one.
