Unfortunately this field doesn't look quite as golden here as it does when I look
out from one of our upstairs windows. I had hoped to wander through the
buttercups but just as I made my way down the pass I could see a herd
of cattle in the distance so I kept on the safe side of the gate.
I can see a beauty in fields which some people don't understand. It's probably
because I grew up on a farm but I can sense the different character of
fields, the wide open ones, the small enclosed ones, the ones where
cattle graze and those where crops grow.
The love of land is deeply ingrained in Irish people, perhaps because for
centuries we couldn't own our own land. J B Keane wrote about this in
his powerful play 'The Field', adopted not quite successfully for the big
screen.
