Getting The Stuffing Box Nuts Apart 2

Here's another view of the wrenches and the process. When loosening the nuts the two wrenches are moved towards each other. When tightening the nuts the wrenches are moved away from each other as shown here.

Isn't this picture exactly backwards? The stuffing box wrench should be on the locking nut and the pipe wrench on the actual coupler.

it is ez when on a brench. eh? not so much 4 ft deep in the bildge and no room for wrenches.

does the movement of the wrenches apply to standard rotation AND opposite rotation engines?

This image is showing how to "tighten" the stuffing gland, note the pipe wrench position.

The position of the wrenches determines whether they would move "towards" or "away" from each other when "tightening" the nuts. It is true that in the pix used, the wrenches move away from each other. It's often a lot easier though to position the wrenches to enable you to squeeze them together to break the nuts apart.
