Galveston Island Architecture

Galveston has one of the largest, historically significant collections of 19th-century buildings, despite two devastating hurricanes in 1900 and 2008.

East End Historic District
It is both a locally-designated historic district and a National Register Historic Landmark District.
Galveston’s first locally-designated historic district originally consisted of abut 40 blocks of the city’s original residential area, directly to the east of downtown.
The district was expanded to the east in 1994.

Lost Bayou Historic District
Galveston’s most recently-established local historic district was designated in 1994.
It is comprised of approximately 23 blocks south of Broadway Boulevard between 21st Street and 16th Street.
The neighborhood was extensively damaged by the 1900 hurricane.
As a result, it includes many early 20th Century buildings.

Silk Stocking Historic District
It is both a locally-designated historic district and a National Register Historic District.
The district was designated in 1975, with 25th Street, as the core thoroughfare.
The neighborhood is one of the most intact residential areas in the city
from the late 19th and early 20th century.

Strand/Mechanic Historic District
It is both a locally-designated historic district and a National Register Historic Landmark District.
Galveston’s only local historic commercial district was designated in 1988 and includes about 13 blocks of the city’s historic commercial center.
The Strand Mechanic area was Galveston’s primary commercial district from the 1850s to the early 1900s and was often referred to
as “the Wall Street of the Southwest”.

Thank you for this beautiful, fascinating gallery of architecture photos and for the information about the buildings. I appreciate your photographing many buildings from different angles & heights. That is more valuable to me than 1 photo of each building, taken from so far away, that I can see it from top to bottom, but I am unable to see the sides and many details. The Bishop's, Moody's Mansion and some churches were my favorites.
