16 January 1707, the Scottish parliament votes to sign the Treaty of Union with England which saw Scotland effectively subsumed into a renamed English state: the Kingdom of Great Britain. The bells of Edinburgh's St Giles Church rang out the tune 'Why Should I be so Sad on my Wedding Day?', reflecting the popular opposition within Scotland to the union with England. Three hundred years on and the debate continues: should Scotland break away from the United Kingdom and go it alone; how will England get by without us; and will all these foreigners suddenly get it into their heads that Britain is not England, and England is not Britain?
