hello everyone, this is a long shot so i’m desperately seeking anyone’s help. my great grandfather was born in sheerness, isle of sheppy in 1881, he was called Frederick James CLARKE. he moved to woolwich and became a captain the royal field artillery, on his marriage certificate his father is down as William C CLARKE, greengrocer on isle of sheppy. ive no other information but i’d love to know more about my family. thank you

Huguenot immigrants: While I am not related specifically to your family, some of my ancestors from Sheppey were quakers. While huguenots and quakers are not the same, many huguenots were assimilated into the quaker way of life over the years. One of the branches of my family settled in Blue Town. I suspect they were running from something back in Essex where the families had lived for generations. It could be in connection with Rosetta Sams as it is her family that kept changing their surname through the census returns. The story I was given was that Rosetta's husband George deserted from the army and changed his surname somewhere between 1881 and 1884, he says because they wouldn't let him marry Rosetta because she was foreign. The truth is, they'd been married for at least 7 years by that time, married in a CofE church, and had 5 children in quick succession. Number 6 came after a 4 year gap and after they had changed their name from Richardson to Watson and moved to Blue Town, Sheppey. Rosetta was born in Essex as had her ancestors for quite a few generations before, so she wasn't foreign, but may have been descended from huguenots as they came from a part of Essex that had both large jewish and quaker populations.They had very dark curly hair and olive skin, which did make them look foreign. The Sams changed their name frequently and I suspect religious persecution could have been the reason, so it is quite possible that they were of huguenot descent.

my dads family were the goodhews they had a fruit farm on st peters rd where Sheppey united football team now play the farm was named holm farm my dad was brian goodhew and he had a brother john goodhew dad was born in 1931 and his brother was born around 1934 from Karen dewis nee goodhew anyone remember brian and john goodhew brian was my dad born in 1931 his brother was born around 1934 they lived on a farm holm farm st peters rd where Sheppey united football team ground is now there dad was William alexander goodhew they were only little boys when there father passed away in 1940 i think it was a fruit farm and William alexanders father david goodhew also kept the farm before him

What a wonderful website. My mom, Constance Angela George, was from, Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, born April 14, 1920, died Dec. 29, 2011 at the wonderful age of 91. Mom married a soldier, named Vic Friday, in 1940, he was killed weeks later in the war. Any information on Vic would be appreciated, he was Mom's first husband. She later married and moved to Canada, where I was born. I feel this website gave me a little bit of history, I have been missing.

My father Barry Mitchell was born at number 16 Baldwin Road in 1933. I think my Grandfather Frederick Charles Mitchell was a bus conductor and was married to my Grandmother Ivy Magdalene nee Long. They were married in 1932. Trying to trace whether or not the Mitchell's originated from the Isle of Sheppey? For reasons unknown my Grandparents marriage ended when my father was a very young boy and it was never discussed. Any information would be much appreciated.

I guess you must be Nicky Dixon, who came after Anne, and Isabelle, and before Linda and Fiona. I remember you all very well, and think my parents attended your wedding circa 1977? You had a pony named Dusty, a dapple? You also had a dear little Dachshund who I loved to bits. I think your father may have a large house in Queen's Road Minster. I also remember your Aunt, Eva, who lived, I think at Haslemere, and your mother, Fay, may have taught briefly at Airedale School? In fact, Mrs Rooke's grand-daughter has been on Trevor Edwards' Sheppey site recently (see Trevor Edwards Sheppey Pictures and Postcards ) I can also remember your paternal grand-father who, to a child, always looked a bit fierce, and a Scottish lady, Isabelle lived in a house opposite you in Oak Lane, and used to attend the Sheerness White Heather Club at Halfway which your father loved so much. I think I may even have a photograph of your father which, if I do, is in a great of pikkies that belonged to my parents. The Sheppey of that time is a world away from the present world, but, such is life.

I am one of Arthur Dixon's daughters! East End Farm was sold in 1989 after the death of both my parents. It looks so different now - well, as does the rest of Sheppey. Still has plenty of good memories

Oh, bless, for the update about East End Farm, and not too surprised, but, what a shame as it is a lovely, old house with so much character (used to play there as a child). I think Mr Dixon told my parents the late Clive Jenkins, a well known trade union official with the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs, used to own/rent a holiday chalet up that way. Oh, well, perhaps, it would have been asking too much for Kirk Douglas or Brad Pitt (depending on your generation) to visit the island!

Their daughter, Ayleen (think that is how her name was spelt) was a budding actress and was accepted by RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) and as they only took the best (e.g. Albert Finney, Roger Moore, Anthony HOpkins, etc.)she was obviously talented. If you are looking for a photograph of Councillor Ward, as he was a socialist, why not contact the Labour Party headquarters in Sheerness? I'm sure they'd have something in their files.

At that time, other commercial enterprises in Minster Village included the fish shop run by Mr and Mrs Thomsett/Thompson (?)and their very pretty daughter; the hardware shop on the left hand side as you left the village and headed for Eastchurch; the greengrocer, Mr Hodge, succeeded by Mr Page; the grocer, Mr Roberts; the newsagent's run by Mr and Mrs Robinson and their assistant, Margaret; the jewellery shop and a second-hand clothes shop. There was also the Minster youth club (that I've mentioned in another comment)whose 'regulars' included David and Derek Price, Derek Barlow, Dave Appleby, Danny Harris, Mike Jones, the Akhurst boys and Paul Jackman.

Just love this site - I lived at Pier Cottages Queenborough before family moved into one of the new prefabs in Vincent Gardens, Sheerness in late 1947. Our family moved to Germany in 1951 & we never lived on Sheppey again but I still regard it as home. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers the Arnold family, especially anyone who went to Holy Trinity School - I would love a picture of that ! Hi. My grandmothers name was Grace Tabbutt the daughter of John William and Helen (Potts) who were butchers at 33 High Street in Sheerness in 1911. John and Helen were married in Sheerness in 1900.Seems Grace and her 3 sisters were all born in Sheerness. Wondered if anyone would know anything about Helen's family as I believe she was born in Sheerness. John was born in Bluntinsham, Huntingdonshire. What a good site. I was born in Vincent Gardens in 1950, and went to Holy Trinity school for a year, then we moved to London. My dad ran the bookstall on the station. I remember the stationmaster, the boating lake, the dockyard and the band, and the crabs that boys used to catch near the pier.

what a great site it has taken me back down memory lane i was born in minster hospital in 1958 and moved away in 1977 but still visit family there my dad used to run a garage in Queenborough and my mum was a nurse at minster hospital to the guest that posted 2 posts earlier about the Fagg family if its the same one Teresa Fagg was mine and my sisters best friend we spent most of our teenage years together great times.

I was born at Minster Hospital in 1943 attended Sheerness Secondary School for girls and Chatham Tech. I lived in Coronation Road and remember the 1953 flood vividily. Also watching the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth on a black and white TV 12 inches square taking turns with the rest of the neighbours. Our house is seen 1st on the left in your photo of the milkman delivering milk. I now live in Adelaide S Australia and have travelled widely. My father worked in the Dockyard during the war as a shipwright his name was Frank Benn. I remember him coming home on his bike. I remember watching the film Dunkirk at the old Rio cinema in black and white and when the Sheerness dockyard was mentioned as one of the places which sent out rescue boats we all yelled with pride. When as children we were as free as the birds cycling roller skating on the esplanade playing in places where we shouldn't? Visiting the donkeys on Halfway Hill in the winter time. Picnics on the cliffs at the end of Oak Lane. Rowing too many in a boat on the canal. Teenagers night out at the holiday camp dance at Leysdown listening to Cliff Richards on the Juke box. Very many happy memories of the Isle of Sheppey. Thank you for the photos.

Can anyone remember a large family, I think about 11 children including 1 set of twins. The eldest child, a girl Lesley went to work in America when she was about 18 or 19, she married Robert Donahue over there and had two children (that I know of) Amy & Robert jnr. I met her in America, went to the wedding and am god-mother to her daughter Amy. I lost touch with her many years ago, I cannot remember her maiden name to try & contact her family on Sheppey. Any help appreciated.

Hello Irene, I have lived on Neptune Terrace now for a few years and very much love my house. I am interested in the history of Neptune Terrace and have already accumulated some information from neighbours, the local library and the internet. I would like to hear more from past residents and any pictures, snippets of information and factual history details would be most welcome. I have scanned many websites and found a few early pictures. One of our neighbours has just re-instated the Neptune Terrace sign-age across the centre houses and the hope is to possibly (dependent on funding) re-instate the Neptune Statue since the original partially fell during the infamous 6th October 1987 Hurricane! Neptune Terrace one of the few Sheerness landmarks left and one of the few remaining that the public can actually see. Many people seem to have fond memories of balmy summer days on Sheerness-On-Sea beach and the familiar sight the beautiful Regency building, Neptune Terrace. I do hope that in the future the importance of Neptune Terrace is realized and help is provided to preserve the Terrace. God knows there is little else in Sheerness that is still a publicly accessible link with Sheerness heritage and it's gentrified past. Let's hope the potential and importance of Neptune Terrace is realised by the local authorities... and soon! The hope is to raise the profile of Neptune Terrace as has been done recently for Naval Terrace and it's associated buildings and get some help to return it as much as possible to it's original state. Certainly the local authorities could start with addressing the awful state of the footpath along the front of the Terrace! Rick

When I went onto Chatham Tech I lost contact with a lot of my old chums at the Central School. Not Zilpher of course, we have been life long friends as well you know and we still remain very close. Sixty years and onwards!!! If you would be so kind as to either give Daphne Humphrey's email address or pass mine to her I would be grateful. I have given great thought to my past acquaintance with her and think she is one of my chums from Chatham Tech days and I think that it is very nice that she wishes to make contact and that it will be interesting to renew our friendship. You know what it's like after moving from Sheerness to London and working nearly 40 years with the Ministry in various locations in London I have met so many people over the years and had quite an extensive career history so it's nice to think I am still remembered from times past. My mum's family lived at 86 james street thru 60's and 70's. I was born in minster and lived at 2a neptune terrace as a toddler. I have great memories of sheerness.

hi peter just found this site and i remember taking the old acumelator into fred's cycle shop to get it charged every saturday morning and he would stand and show us how to straighten buckled wheels while he chated away. didnt he end up repeiring tv's been through my dads ol pics but unable to find the shop. if i remember right next door was a bakers

I lived at Minister 1948 - 1959 (moved to Scotland when the dockyard closed) went to Minster primary & Sheerness secondary. On the picurtures of Minister a Pauline Reay said she had a grandfather called Frederick Ribbens and another gf called Frederick Barlow. Have just found this excellent site, I was attracted to it because I am researching my family who spent a lot of their early years in Kent. My G.G.Grandfather(Middleton)was a carpenter at Sheerness Dockyard from about 1830 until he retired in the 1870s/1880s. He was married in "Minster Parish Church" in 1838 and it looks as though the family lived in No.12 West Street,"Bluetown" until about 1880. I think his Son and Grandson also worked in the Dockyard. Would love to hear from anyone who may have any connection / info or knows if the house in West Street is still there.

This is a great site. My great-grandfather was a P.C in the Metropolitan Police in Sheerness Dockyard in the 1850s. I wonder whether anyone has any pictures or information about the Dockyard police at that time. He was a Woodland. Does anyone remember the Woodlands and Paytons who lived at the Halfway?

I would like to hear from the David who lived in Denis terrace Minster. Ilived in Baldwin Rd from 1943-1962. Married and lived in Filer rd halfway then moved to Cornwall... Many happy memories of the Island. The War, finding hand grenades on the cliffs. Swimming in the murky brown water- what a contrast to Cornwall. I recall a long list of names from my childhood, my next door neighbours Kathleen,Garrick and William Dalgleish. My great grandmother was born in Blue Town in 1888 and married at St Paul's in 1911. The family name had been Richardson but for some reason changed their name to Watson around the mid 1980s. They lived in Hope Street and later Rose Street. Grace Waston's mother was a Rosetta Sams and I have thought that she may have been Jewish (although her husband probably wasn't). I've now seen that there was a synagogue in Hope Street, so I guess that adds some weight to the theory. Grace's father, George Robert worked as a labourer in the navel dockyard. Grace married a soldier based in the barracks in(?) Blue Town and one of her sisters owned a boarding house in Blue Town also.

gidday trev, just found this site. am amazed at the pictures.i was born sheppey in 1941 and my family migrated to australia in 1952. i lived at 66 alma street sheerness.i have very dim recollections sheerness, can remmember marine pde, allotment garden that dad had somewhere and the ship that is sunk off sheerness full of wartime ammunition.i also went to miletown school.thanks for stirring up the memmories. i,ll keep visiting the site.aussietubb.

I too have been trying to locate a photo of the dockyard workers going home to lunch on their bikes. Can't believe there isn't one somewhere! As a young school girl I remember that sight; and quite a sight it was. The canteen must have been bad (if one existed) for loads of dockers to take the trouble of cycling home and back like that. Good site by the way - I enjoyed it. Keep going - Sheppey's past is worth remembering.

oh just found this board love the pictures brings back alot of memorys i lived on hartlip close from 1968 till 1979 the zulus brought back some memorys i was sooo scared of them when i was a kid haha any one got any pictures of the high street or the old fairground regards :O)
