Hello my name is Steve Spouse, I was lucky enough to be able to visit the drydock at least once a fortnight over a number or years in the 1980s, I have most of the Gravesend tugs in dry dock as well as some visitors and various vessels. I knew one of the workers quite well his name was Mick Baker, when the dry dock closed he used to work the cranes unloading fruit ships.( I must try and get a website up and going!).my best visit was driving into the dry dock one day and seeing five tugs outside the sun XXV. Albert from FelixstoweLord Waverly. Sauria from Felixstowe. and Hibernia the last two named tugs were there to change colours and go to new owners in Greece.

My Grand Father Albert chalcraft was ChargeMan in the DockYard 1939 - 1961 .He spent much of the war on the Boom. In 1950 was heavely involved with rescure ans salvage of the HMS Truculent. He received the B.E.M. in the 1961 New Year Honours for his work in the Yard.

My grandfather, Harry Furnaess was a shipwright foreman in the dockyard until he retired. He lived at 74 Halfway Road.

My GG Grandfather was a blacksmith, living in Blue Town. Thomas Briggs aged 24yrs married Maria Richards aged 22yrs (daughter of blacksmith Thomas and Maria Richard). Three months after the marriage on 9th August 1854 Thomas died (purpura/haemorrhage). Their son Thomas was born 1855. What school would he have gone to if living in Blue Town or in Sheerness? These pictures are fab, they bring back so many memories and as I have been researching my family history, the pictures give me an insite into what Sheerness was like for my ancestors. This is a Message for David Mitchel in Australia although his message was 10 years ago! My Grandfather was an electrician in the Dockyard around the time you were an apprentice. I remember his face, but he died when I was young. His name was George Rowell, sometimes known as Cecil. Did you know him?

In response to Ginny Wade's question about Bob and Betty Baillie, Bob was the Superintending Elelctriclal Engineer, i.e the senior Electircal Engineer in the Dockyard, and a civilian post. They used to live at 4 Dockyard Terrace, overlooking the green and the telephone exchange. As a boy I lived next door at number 3. My father was the Chief Engineer, one of the few positions held by a serving RN officer. Outside working hours I remember the Dockyard as a wonderful adventure playground for my brother and I.

Great to look at these photos. My family on both sides worked at the dockyard. My Dad was David James who did his apprenticeship in the blacksmith shop in the 1940's. My granddad was Harry Atkins who was an electrician (supervisor?),in the dockyard until he retired in the 50's. Anyone out there with any connections?

I was wondering whether you might authorise the use of some of your pictures (from around the mid 1800s) for the BBC 2 television programme Coast as we are currently doing a piece on the scorpions down at the dockyards. Can you help please? Many of my Ancestors with the surname HAMMOND, were born and lived in the Minster, Sheerness area during the 1700 - 1800 perioud. Some were born in the Blue Houses. It would be great if people could hunt out their old photos which show our social history and allow the heritage centre to make copies so that they don't feel as if they have to donate their originals.I'm looking for images which can be used on cards to sell at the heritage centre. If we all do our little bit, as Jenny and Ian are doing, then our past will not be lost.

Thanks for your pictures. My GG Grandfather was born in Bluetown Sheerness in about 1802 but left there about 1810. I have never seen anything about the place before. I believe that he was baptised in the Dockyard church but I am not sure if it was the one in the photos. Wow, if it was. His name was John West and his father came from Chatham with his family. John was the only member of his family born in Sheerness.

My dad Robert Ernest Arthur Howland, was a chargehand shipwright on Admiralty Floating Dock (AFD) 22, Sheerness Dockyard. When the dockyard closed in 1959 AFD 22 was towed to Rosyth Scotland. My Dad went with it and family joined him later.

Trevor, thank you for such an interesting site and for sharing those photos with us. My family originate from Sheerness and my father was an apprentice boilermaker in the dockyard,this must have been about 1918. We moved to London during the depression years but family visits brought us back during and just after WWII. I remember Navy Days at the dockyard,hard hat divers and rides out to sea on a fast patrol boat. Your site broughyt back many good memories

Very interesting collection of photographs. I lived in the Garrison in 1953 when the tidal surge broke through the sea wall and had to evacuate from my house and wade through the rising sea water along with my heavily pregnant mother, we were never able to return to our house and had to be rehoused but we did find our cat on the doorstep of our wrecked house a month later.

Brian Douglas Brian probably a bit late getting to you but I think you are refferring to the coal hulk ex HMS Agincourt which was taken to london to be broken up, late 1950s or early 1960s sorry I cannot be more specific, I was involved in unmooring the vessel and the man in charge was Bill Payne of Paynes Marine transport Bill went to New Zealand in the 1970s but his family still work on the river now. I served my five year electrical fitter apprenticeship in the Dockyard from 1951 - 1956. The pictures brought back may memories. I remember going down below decks of the wooden hulks of old ships at low tide. These hulks supported the seaward side of the Basin. Also the time the gunnery school shot down a plane towing the gunnery school target. As an apprentice I had to help to pull out all the electrical equipment on board the submarine HMS Truculent after in was returned to the Dockyard and put into drydock. I now live in Sydney, Australia, but return to Kent and Sheppey every four years or so for a holiday.

Fabulous pictures of Sheerness docks, particularly old pier which stirs old memories of many happy hours of fishing - used to come home with a bag full of fish every trip then? Thank you

An impressive collection of very interesting Sheerness images. I am currently researching the fortifications of Sheerness (I run a website on 17th century fortification at www.fortified-places.com/index.html), so of particular interest to me is the image entitled "Aerial View", which shows the remains of the 18th century bastioned trace around Blue Town in the foreground.
