This view is taken from below the dam. Emerald lake's glaciated basin is at 5500ft. I walked many miles on snow for this experience and picture. The dam was built of huge hand hewn granite blocks during the mid to late 1800s for storing water to hydraulically mine the gold mines down stream towards Weaverville. Sapphire Lake is in the upper middle basin, and Mirror lake hangs on the shelf in the distance.
