The Schlössli Inn and Cattle Trading Barn

A typical Appenzell house. On the right is the residence area now housing a small inn downstairs. Upstairs is now the main residence area.
On the left, under the same roof, is the barn and stables, which is now used for the family's second income, trading cattle.
Like similar buildings in areas where there are no high winds attached to the Föhn, everything is under one roof.
In areas of Switzerland where the Föhn brings high winds with it, the commercial buildings are always not attached to the residence
and always at a right angle to the prevailing Föhn winds when they pass over the residence.
This early system of fire prevention dates back at least 600 years.
