Thelma and Louise Point---an unofficial name, not on any map---is the place where
movie makers filmed the final scene of "Thelma and Louise." In the movie, two
fugitive women drive their car off the edge of a cliff into a river canyon. The
Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission web page calls the site "Fossil Point."
The point is south-southeast of the main overlook at Dead Horse Point State Park. The
official name of the road is "San Juan County Road 142" but most people call it
(somewhat erroneously) "Shafer Trail." I stopped here to inspect the terrain
with my binoculars, completely unaware that a movie had been filmed here.
Two young women in a sport utility vehicle arrived as I was inspecting the rock strata across
the river. When they stepped out of their vehicle my attention shifted from the distant landscape
to a more interesting one close at hand. One of those women informed me of the movie-making
activity here. She also photographed me with my camera. Thank you, anonymous tourist!
I'll bet there aren't ten Americans who knew that Thelma and Louise drove their car off Fossil point. I knew. I've been there and I know the Moab area well.
