Pondering a descent into the trench

Floating Island, Utah view map

So....am I standing on a dike or on the material left over from the excavation of a trench? Maybe both. Both of the features affect the flow of water and salt on the playa. Whatever I'm standing on, it was rock solid. However, as I discovered soon after taking this photo, the slope leading into the trench was not as solid, which made for a tricky ascent out of the trench.

This spot is about half a mile (0.8km) south of the end of
the curving finger of Floating Island.

Did you ever see the movie "Tremors" Dave?

Is this some sort of trickery? I only see you in this photo.

Who made the dike - and maybe more importantly why

Somebody please explain to chempilot the difference between "dike" and "dyke." Does the fact that trench coats are stored in closets have any bearing on the matter?

this is the dike source? i though they came out of closets...
