My animal track guide calls this combination of marks a typical sign of stenographer deer. It is
unknown why pens are left next to hoof prints. One theory is that the deer are wasteful creatures,
using a pen once, then discarding it. Another theory has been offered by noted scientist I. M.
Listorama, who has studied this phenomenon for at least five minutes. He believes that this is
evidence of a prank by pen lizards who enjoy creating the false impression that stenographer deer
live here. However, he does not explain why the lizards like to perform such pranks...
"Scats and Tracks of the Desert Southwest" says this is the
track of a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
