Hoppers parked under a beautiful sky

East of Green River, Utah view map

Railroad companies are noted for their contributions to the arts---especially in their efforts to provide free canvases to creators of graffiti. Thus it is no surprise to see these excess hoppers parked on a siding in this picturesque locale east of Green River, Utah.

Just as movie companies use location scouts to find landscapes suitable for a particular story, the railroad industry uses a similar process to find the best places to store excess or obsolete freight cars and locomotives. It takes a certain mindset to determine how to achieve the right visual effect. Had these hoppers been parked on a secluded track in a freight yard, mankind would not have benefitted at all. But here, under a dramtic Utah sky, the effect is stunning. The next time you see freight cars parked in attractive, out-of-the-way places, remember that artistic minds made it possible.
