BED SYSTEM 2: Stuff on the hood... 20061010_0139

ABOUT THIS PHOTO:
Night-time storage of things on the hood of the car facilitated the process of creating room for sleeping. Here some tote boxes sit on the hood, covered with a blue tarp for protection from the weather. A tree branch secures the tarp. This was not possible with my next car (a mini-van) because of its steeply-slanted hood.

ABOUT SYSTEM 2:
My second system came into being in mid-2005 when I built a carpeted plywood floor in the Subaru. It occupied all of the car’s interior except for the driver’s seat, the center console, and the floor area of the front passenger seat. This required me to remove the front passenger seat and the bench-style back seat, pretty easy to do because of the simple way they were attached to the floor and their light weight.

The new floor eliminated the discomforts, and eased the space problems, of the first system. Now I was able to lie parallel to the car's long axis, lessening the need to move things around for sleeping. This issue became even less bothersome when I discovered I could store things during the night on the hood of my car (a tarp kept them dry).

Impressive vehicle, John!

PS, I am 6feet 4 inches and can walk about inside without a problem.

Dave,
My motor caravan is 18 feet long, not much longer than a large car. And as wide as a large car. I can park in almost all normal parking spaces. Drive almost everywhere a car can. The height is just over 8 feet the only thing that stops me parking everywhere But multi story car parks or underground car parks don't stop me from traveling to anywhere in England. And I get 26 mpg, more on a long run.
. Inside I can have two large single beds or one huge double.
At the rear I have a full size flushing toilet in a compartment that can be used as a shower.
I have diesel fired thermostatically controlled heating. Hot and cold running water. A two burner cooker with a grill. A fridge that works on mains electric, or 12 volts, or propane gas. I can plug into mains electric on most camping sites. Have 12 volt and mains electric lighting.
It drives like a car with power steering an automatic gearbox, could travel for hours at 95 mph. This the 3rd motor caravan I have had, I think it will be my last.

John Cooper: Everything is a compromise. A recreational
vehicle, regardless of size, would make sleeping much easier,
but would be more difficult to drive, be limited in where it
could go because of it height and length, be limited in
where it could be parked, and would have undesirable
mileage. My mini-van is easy to operate, can go anywhere
other cars can go, can park in regular parking spaces, and
gets reasonable mileage (20 mpg).

An RV would make life a lot easier.

Things have come a long way in the last few years.
Your current system is pretty good, I think.
