Lake Marburg - Codorus State Park - Nov. 1966

Before Codorus State Park, there was Codorus Creek and the community of Marburg. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the P.H. Glatfelter Paper Company collaborated in order to establish Lake Marburg as both a water source for Glatfelter and the people of Spring Grove and a recreational lake. Codorus Creek was dammed and Marburg was flooded December 6, 1966 and Lake Marburg was full three years later. Because the lake was created over top of Marburg, during droughts it is possible to see the roads leading into the old community. This photo shows some of the original structures that remain under the water.

We just came here today to fish- water was low because there hasn't been enough rain, and the cw wont stop pulling water. I just learned today by one of the rangers there collecting trash about Marburg. It's awesome, really. !!

The town appears to be over five hundred years old with the red bricks that have been discovered there.

Does anyone know the family names for the 2 farms that would be under what is now called Sinsheim cove? Wondering if anyone has pics of those farms as well. Thanks!

The Friends of Codorus sold a 2 volume CD that had a lot of photos of the buildings that were here before the lake was built. My great uncle Ray Shaffer took many photos of the lake construction. I wish someone had thought to gather more photos of the houses and farms that were there prior to the lake's construction. Larry Rorhbaugh has worked with locals to gather copies of many old photos taken of this area prior to it becoming Codorus State Park. He presents programs on the history of the area if you are local.

Am looking for any pld photos of the Pumping Station Road area where the Stone House still stands. Also any older photos out the Black Rock Road Mary Ann Furnace area .Any help would be appreciated, thanks I can be called at 1-717-637-9728 before 9pm

My son and I are local divers living in Taneytown. We've dived the lake a couple times and find it fascinating. There's a treasure trove of stuff on the bottom. We would love to get access to other parts of the lake containing buildings. And to document what's under there now. I'm wondering if the Park Service would allow this?

I have a lot of pictures during the construction of Project 70. My parents were there all the time taking pictures. We knew a lot of people who lived where this was built, we lived in Porters Sideling. I will have to find all the pictures.

My parents farm is under water as well. The tree line where the band shell is located was the border line for their property. It was the Keeney farm.

When I was little we used to go to a place called sterner's Pond to go swimming where they supplied inner tubes for you and we'd spend the day there swimming but then it was all covered with water when they made Project 70

I use to live on a small farm on the Marburg flat and went to Naces School for 3 years before Manheim was built. I now live on Smith Station Rd. What a change in my 68 years I've seen.
