There is one consolation to travelling to London and watching this stuff go by the window of the train is it. It would be true to say that the Great Western Railway to Penzance is possibly one of the most beautiful in the world, certainly I can only think of one more lovely in the UK and that’s the line that goes up the West Coast of Scotland.
I think it runs from Fort William to Mallaig – I’m sure Ray will know if that’s right! I went there on holiday probably 20 years ago with Claz who wanted to go to “Ben’s Beach” from the film “Local Hero”. She researched it and discovered the town in the film is not even on the same coast as the beach, the beach is, in fact, at Arisaig. That place is simply stunning, even by my own high standards of Cornwall.
Mind you, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea – it’s a forty mile drive from the nearest town (Fort William) and to go anywhere you have to go through Fort William so you have an 80 mile round trip before you go anywhere! However, that aside, the scenery, the beach, the views, the sheer wildness are all worth every bit of effort.
But then don’t take my word for the fact that it’s the most beautiful train journey in the country – I’ve certainly not done them all! AND if the Times today is anything to go by, we won’t be able to describe Scotland as part of the country any more soon!
Somehow, on my journey through the West Country, the light at this time of year just adds that golden-ness that I’ve mentioned before.
This morning, the light was as perfect as I’ve ever seen it.
This shot is once again a straightforward shapshot from a train window, the only thing I’ve done to it is to make the water straight with a half-degree correction.
There was a golden thing in last year's shot too!
