18th August 2007 - stop your sobbing

Mother Nature has been crying here for months. She’s nearly out of tears with any luck. Today has been another of those days where the heavens have been open and rain has been pouring like stair-rods all day. I nipped out in aa short break to capture this shot of a new bird feeder on our bird table that’d been fascinating me since I’d put it there a couple of hours earlier. I could watch the birds who feast daily on our tables all day and today, I spent more time than most days on just this activity.

The spectacle is always a good cheery one, with the hens charging round trying to dispossess the sparrows or other birds of whatever tasty morsel they’ve got. The birds on the table are very helpful to the hens by chucking seed around all over the place too. At the moment, the high winds make it more of a spectacle than ever and with gaggles of babies flapping their wings and begging mum for food, it’s a charming and largely free of charge sight (other than the cost of the food that is).

We’ve done something quite rare today and that’s nearly nothing! We’ve sat on the sofa and watched Soccer AM, then watched Sky’s Super Saturday – sorry but this is something I think is only going to ring bells with a few folks. It’s a bit like the old ‘Grandstand’ but with modern technology and the permitted match coverage of pundits watching the games live.

It’s been a bit of a thrill to see Spurs have even joined in and managed at last to show they are capable of stopping sobbing too – even if the victory was only Derby County, at least it’s broken our duck.

Years ago, I spent an afternoon in Derby ‘sobbing’ when I went to see Spurs play away there in about 1981 or 1982 I think. Somehow I got separated from my group of friends in the street after the game, got chased down the road by a gang of County fans and ended up hiding in a petrol station, where the manager very kindly let me sit behind the counter for half an hour out of sight until the trouble had passed. I don’t relish some of those gruesome moments when late 70s/early 80s footie brought with it trouble.

These days it’s rare to see violence at games – the last time it reared its head for me personally, I was a beneficiary, when we were locked into the Bell and Hare after a match because of marauding Chelsea fans! That one wasn’t too tough really.

Hopefully Mother Nature will dry her eyes soon and we’ll get some nice weather for the last gasp of summertime.

Last year's shot was very successful in pbase terms, which surprised me for such an obvious snapshot.

Soggy fatballs! Just what the birds like.
