17th August 2007 - mud maid

I think I must be going soft in the head because I have suddenly found a real love of garden art. Given that I’m a self-professed philistine with regard to arty stuff, this has come as something of a shock.

I love the mud maid at Heligan and she’s at her finest at the moment with her shock of mad green hair threaded through with the reddish-gold of the now-flowering montbretia that is her hair. Sue and Peter Hill made this wonderful thing. It really works for me today especially, although at all times it’s lovely.

She looks so comfortable and peaceful sleeping in the woods. She looks so soft, curvy and feminine – she’s certainly ‘all woman’. I think she’s a great ‘lesson’ to me - it’s time to lie down and snooze for a bit. I want to climb over the little fence and stroke her. Maybe someone will stroke me – you know, in a way that’s comforting, inclusive and kind. If I do snooze, maybe when I wake up then things will have moved on and it’ll be the start of a metaphorical new day.

In the very first year of my PAD I did a shot of another Sue and Peter Hill sculpture at Heligan - the Giant's head.

I was not hot enough last year.

The foliage is so well placed and trimmed. Very smart

When I saw the thumbnail I thought you'd found the Hobbits.

I love this! If we would ever get some rain so I could make some mud....

You are right, she does look very comfy. I would love to visit the Lost Gardens sometime.
