8th August 2007 - red rocks

I’ve said before that the train journey I undertake to go to my office is just about the most glorious you can imagine. It travels along the south coast, from Exeter through Dawlish to Newton Abbott along what has to be considered a spectacular coastline with cliffs of burnished copper. It’s really something.

On a day like today, when the sky is blue, the sun is shining and the cotton wool clouds are skipping across the sky, it’s perfect. There are many occasions when you can’t even see the join between the sea and sky because of the murk and indeed I shot it looking just like that some time ago.

There have also been occasions when the train is being battered by waves as it goes through this stretch – that’s quite a scary one.

The line was built by one of our most eminent engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and it’s a true feat of engineering although its proximity to the sea is cause for lots of cost and concern to our railway authorities. Apparently every year it costs millions to repair and make sure it doesn’t fall into the sea!

I try not to think about that one but to just enjoy its beauty.

Last year, Robosapien.

Manchester to Plymouth used to be a 10 hour journey when I was in the RN.
I was too bloody tired to look at the view.
This though looks stunning.

Sounds like an idyllic journey on a fine day! Brunel is an English hero but on the downside, he did create Swindon!! LOL Beautiful picture.

Is it so impossible to run the line around Teignmouth, Holcombe and Dawlish and so avoid the erosion beach problem. And open up the beach for tourists. Money making idea - run a 'drop off and pick up service for beach goers on the abandoned line. and have an efficient train service on the main line. Ah sorry, I forgot, this is England, where the solution to a problem is to appoint a well paid committee to study the problem. Do something useful, not the English way.

I've always wanted to visit this spot; Cockwood Harbour near Starcross is also very scenic. <http://cjm.fotopic.net/p41549686.html
Back in the old days, they were able to divert trains via Okehampton but that route closed in 1968.

A long time since I travelled on that rail line.

Beautiful cliffs and sky. I can't imagine a train ride swept by waves. WOW!--Rene
