2nd June 2007 - ripe

I’m not a great lover of fruit as a rule but I do love a sweet, ripe cherry and this is one such. I know that because shortly after this shot was taken, it (the cherry that is, not the shot) was in my tummy!

I actually didn’t buy these cherries to photograph but when they’d been washed and were sitting there all shiny, red and moist, I couldn’t resist – well, who could? I mean, they are really good rude food aren’t they?

Unlike the rest of the UK we’ve had a pretty grotty day here – we’ve been in thick cloud all day and it’s been cold and damp. Despite this, I’ve donned several layers of woolly, including DM’s lucky hat and braved the weather to go and do some planting in the veggie patch – those squashes are now in, as is a second sowing of spinach and chard because despite the wabbit proof fencing, the little wabbity swines have been limboing under the gate…….ggrrrr.

They’ve also decimated my newly planted herbaceous and rose bed – eating everything that sprouts as soon as it does so I’ve spent the day putting up a fence around that too.

So, you may remember me ‘cooing’ and ‘aaahing’ at the baby bunnies but no longer – Mr McGregor and me are now best buddies and I can be seen running out into the garden, screaming like a fishwife ‘you little f***kers – get off my plants’ every time I see a little flopsy, mopsy or cotton tail – next, a shotgun (she says loudly so the wabbits can hear) (don’t worry – I’d NEVER really shoot a bunny!)

Can you tell I’m feeling a bit better? Yeah – just in time to go back to work – how’s that for crap timing?

Last year Kim gave me a great tip, which I've followed this year and had very few bites!

We have lots of trouble with rabbits eating everything in our gardens here in the south one thing that works for us is to go by the barber shop or hair salon and ask them to save you the hair they sweep up. Spread around your garden and the rabbits will leave things alone for a couple of weeks or until their not afraid of the hair any longer. This will at least give your plants time to grow and the rabbit bites won't do as much damage.
