17th January 2007 - Rudolph is empty

There are some things in life that can’t be explained by logic or reason. That’s what happened today – logic said that the Spurs fans would have been ‘safer’ and less likely to cause or get into mischief in the pub than on the streets. The Chief Constable of the local police felt otherwise. He thought the Cardiff fans were so dangerous that they needed special segregation – whole swathes of empty seats at the ground beside them so they couldn’t get anywhere near a Spurs fan.

All good so far. His idea was that it was better to have the Spurs fans on the street and to keep the pubs closed. So, instead of having us all nicely tucked up in the Bell and Hare, we had to stand on the street in the vain hope Sharon would be allowed to open up at some point. In the event, we ended up here – in Rudolphs, on the corner of Billy Nick way – it’s a ‘club’ you see. You have to be a member to get in. You have to pay to be a member so they raked it in tonight because the pubs were shut. Hmmmmm.

Rudolphs is a strange throwback 1970s disco, complete with disco music of the era, mirrors on the walls and flashing disco lights. I can’t imagine a place I’d rather be on a Saturday night. It has none of the Bell and Hare’s charm.

Still, a fab evening with Colin as a guest member of the dog shit hill mob, a good game with the Spurs winning with such ease and comfort that it was almost a walk in the park. Later, after the match, we were allowed to go back to the B&H – Cardiff fans are, apparently, only dangerous until 8pm, after that they’re pussycats!

Unfortunately there were no players sharing a beer with us tonight, unlike the double winning side of the 60/61 season – apparently it was their favourite post-match watering hole. (According to Spurs Miscellany, a cool Spurs trivia book bought for me by my folks for Crimbo.)

By the way – I didn’t drink my way through all those empties.

Last year, I was away from home...but in the Midlands!

Whew! At first I thought those must be drugs testing samples from the players!
