30th September 2006 - three generations

Sometimes you connect with people in a way that you’d never have expected. We’ve found that connection with Iain and Becky, who have been great friends to us since we came to Cornwall. I’ve done several postings of members of the family, as has David. The most memorable for me, was my shot of Becky when she was newly pregnant with Greg. I love that photo and clearly so do observers of my photo diary because it was one of the highest hit photos of last year – I think only half a dozen shots got more hits all year.

Strangely, for one so very beautiful, she’s extremely camera shy and although I would love dearly to be able to do a proper studio session with her, it’s obvious she really feels uncomfortable in front of the camera. I wish that wasn’t so.

Becky has a twin. He’s called Robin and today he wed his long-term love, Steph. DM and I were the ‘official’ photographers and this is one of my shots. As we only know Robin and Steph through Becks and Iain, it didn’t seem right to show one of the two of them as they start their married life.

In any event, this shot is one I really like. Martin (right) is Beck’s Dad and of course Greg is her little boy so it’s three generations of the same family. Can't you just see the love and pride on Martin's face as he hugs his 'little girl'? Becky, her Dad and all of her brothers miss their Mum very much, especially on days like today. She died of cancer a couple of years ago and so never got the pleasure of meeting this little chap, or seeing her grandchildren grow up or even seeing Robin get married.

I wish I could have met her because she must have been some woman. There is a photo of her on the wall at Becky and Iain’s house on her graduation day only a short time before she died. Becky is now a firm believer in ‘seizing the moment’ – she says when you never know what’s around the corner you should get on and do the things that you want to do.

These people are extremely special. It is my privilege and honour to know them. David and I were lucky to find them as neighbours and now to count them as friends.

I was photographing old junk last year.
