15th November 2005 - reason no 7

Critters!

Critters that need new homes that is. Over the last few years, I have ‘rescued’ three dogs, three hens, two guinea pigs and ten rabbits from places where they were no longer loved, wanted or properly cared for. I’ve given them warmth, shelter, companionship, a clean environment, food and medical help until they’ve left this earth.

At the moment, I’ve got two ‘rescued’ dogs – Archie’s story can be seen here and Rosie’s here, two ‘rescued’ hens, who lived with an elderly gent who went into a care home because he couldn’t cope any more and a wabbit who was one of two brothers (the other one of the two died a year or so back at the ripe old age of eight), bought by a couple who had heard that house rabbits make good pets but were so clueless that they didn’t realise that two male rabbits, even from the same litter, will fight and spray their territory without so much as a second thought for the fact that they are in someone’s home!!! They lasted six months there then I took them on.

Truffle is the only rabbit left now in my care because I’ve been declining to help in recent times when asked to take on another rabbit. There are only so many hours in the day and I got fed up of spending most of my spare ones up to my elbows in rabbit shit. Maybe when I have more time…..

Once again, I come back to the point that rabbits don’t make good pets for young children. They’re too strong and will kick and scratch if they don’t feel safe. Once a small child has been kicked or scratched a few times, they lose confidence and the rabbit gets neglected. They’re not easy pets to look after, contrary to most people’s view that they are small, pretty and fluffy so how difficult could it be? Unfortunately this means there are hundreds, if not thousands of unwanted bunnies in hutches around the country. I scratched the surface of the problem with my little ‘rescue centre’ but in the grand scheme of things my efforts were almost un-noticable.

I AM proud of giving a good home to these creatures but I wish so much I could do more.

This mug was a gift from DM and they’re his pics of Rosie and Archie (on the back) – they’re my little reminder of home while I’m here in the office.

Last year, I was thinking about and photographing chocolate and the year before, making kebabs - yes, veggie ones!

Another reason that I like you, Linda. I don't htink it's too much to ask for a safe home, good food and lots of love...

Too true about rabbits. Can't beat a good guinea-pog in my opinion. We had one (Eric) that lived wild in the garden for a few years along with a disabled pigeon called Ernie. Big, strong and healthy, and very picky about what he ate. He lovely bronze fennel but wouldn't touch the green variety! He died happy with a mouthful of varigated sage. After that diet of plant and herb, he tasted delicious when we roasted him. (made that last bit up!)

That's a wonderful picture of Rosie. So sweet…

Today I passed by two dogs who I'm sure were dumped on a scarcely treaveled dirt road. They were in the same place yesterday. It breaks my heart that they are so loyal and awaiting their asshole owners return. I will drive back by tonight with dog food and water and then probably take them to the animal shelter.

They are beautiful dogs Linda. Ss for hours in the day I can't believe how much you already fit into a day - I'm sure there's time travel involved :-)

Here's an animal I came across whilst researching Llama treking earlier today.
I saw Llama treking advertised whilst out walking, I'm not planning on doing any.

The cup that cheers. (God, that's corny, even for me!)
