8th October 2005 - I'm a grumpy old hector

Today hasn’t been the best day of my life and I’d be lying if I said it was anywhere close.

As if virtually killing myself all week to try to do three jobs in the closest time to a normal day that I can isn’t enough (which usually, if I don’t take any breaks and just get my head down and go flat out all day, ends up being around twelve hours), I seem determined to make sure that I apply at least as much pressure in my home life too.

You see, life is dead complicated at the moment. We’ve got a valuation on the house on Monday and the place looks like a building site still (trying to make the next step of the grand plan happen). As well as this pressure to try to make some headway with the work, we’ve also got all of our belongings in storage, costing us more to service than our old mortgage cost. We need to get the building work finished to make room to get it delivered so that we’re not spending that money any more and we’re also both spending money to buy new things even though we own perfectly good ones that we have no access to. We’re off to a fancy party on Wednesday night and all our smart shoes are in storage so we’re both going to have to buy more.

So, whereas a sensible person would be spending her Saturday relaxing with her loved ones, I’ve been shut in our bedroom painting, filling and sanding so that by Monday it looks as though we’re nearly there………this is really, really important to us.

Tonight I have lungs and eyes full of plaster dust (despite wearing a mask), my hands feel like claws and my head is aching from paint fumes BUT I have painted the ceiling (twice), the walls (once) and made a reasonable stab at disguising the channels the electrician cut in the walls to put the wiring in.

There has been no respite all day and so, in another potd panic, the supper gets shot again – this time it’s my goat cheese and tomato stuffed Ramiro Peppers with dauphinoise potatoes – well actually, it’s the peppers before they got stuffed. I just liked the way the stalks looked like alien eyes. About two minutes later, they got cut off because they wouldn’t fit in the oven.

Now I’m going to slump on the sofa and I’ll probably be asleep before nine thirty. I expect DM is delighted he chose me for his partner, not some flibberty gibbert glamour puss who knows nothing of painting and DIY (not). If he’d chosen someone else, he’d be out eating supper in a fancy restaurant, gazing lovingly into her eyes over the candle light and playing footsie under the table. Instead he gets a worn-out old frump………

Last year, I was travelling here and I'm actually quite pleased that I've come across my pic from two years ago today because it demonstrates that some of my learnings from photography I have taken in and mastered!

The scariest thing tho is that during the evening, LA confessed a desire to go ballroom dancing... Noooooooo...!

Hang in there Linda, it will be worth it all in the end. Those peppers are like you and DM - lives intertwined...
