20th July 2005 - full

I hate shopping with a passion as I have said many, many times already. I do my stuff online and have just found myself a new shopping buddy – Ocado – the online/delivery bit of Waitrose. They knock spots off the others.

They have one-hour time slots so no waiting around for two hours for your food, delivery men who bring it all into the kitchen so no carrying, colour coded bags so you can see the stuff that needs to go into the freezer and fridge easily, no delivery charge and best of all no crappy substitutions!

It is, of course, only a matter of time before their ‘raised bar’ is met by the two biggies, Sainsbury and Tesco so I’m sure their advantage over the others will end up being eroded but they are also more ‘ethical’ than the others – no shareholders above the customers on their list of important people in their lives so they just seem to ‘care’ more.

Anyway, they impress me and they’ve got my vote for the time being.

It’s been a bit difficult here over the last few days while we’ve been waiting for the order – good job we ate out last night, I’m not sure even I (as a kitchen miracle worker) could have come up with a sensible meal from twenty chillis, half a dozen bottles of champagne (spoils from ‘Boss of the Year’ that we’re saving for a special day), two potatoes and two sticks of celery! Now we have full cupboards and I can confidently predict we will eat well tonight as we now have replenished stocks of all the essential ingredients – phew!

Now – what’s for supper tonight? Not the contents of this bag – it’s the cheapest, nastiest dog food I know – but it’s the one both dogs love, love, love (and Rosie in particular is very picky about what she eats!

Last year I was imitating Bill Brandt and two years ago I was with the Mingay Men!

Whilst I don't use the delivery service, I've never understood why they market themselves as Ocado and not Waitrose - aren't they missing a trick there? I too am a Waitrose fan, its such a relaxing shop, very near me, and as you say no fat cats to pander too....

Let's see... Spicy cream of potato and celery soup, though I'm not sure how good the champagne would be as a stock.
We use a delivery service for groceries now and again. My wife loves it, but I don't like someone else picking out my meat and produce.

ah Waitrose - I'll use the one less than a mile away!
