18th June 2005 - shock horror.....

....lazy photo a day!

It is such a hot day here in the UK…..not that we should be complaining because it’s been pretty grim up to now and so this has to be better! But, to tell the truth, it’s been too hot for me.

I’ve done almost nothing other than pick up Colin from the station and pop into the supermarket for a few bits and pieces on the way home. The rest of the day has been spent eating ice cream (Green and Black’s utterly scrummy chocolate and orange flavour), drinking cold water and flumping around while chatting with my buddy.

We’ve been watching the world go by…..well, as much of it as passes by a back garden in Sandhurst! While we’ve been here there has been a procession of birds on the bird table. They’ve been a bit hesitant because we’ve been sat around ten feet away so a few have had emergency mid-flight reversals and gone off to suss us out from the safety of a nearby tree but most have come down anyway.

My camera was, of course, inside while all this was going on and when I finally managed to summon the energy to go and get it I thought I might have missed my chance. In fact though, the pigeon on the right of the shot had been fighting off the one on the trellis behind for a few minutes and spending so much energy keeping him at bay that the collared dove and sparrow went almost completely un-noticed!

I know these are hardly exotic birds but nonetheless they are good to have here. Well to tell the truth any birds are welcome here – even the sparrowhawk that occasionally takes a collared dove from the birdtable. In fact, the house sparrow is especially welcome. It is rapidly losing its territory in our country – in my last house in Oxford, I did not see a single sparrow in the three years I was there. So these days I make sure our garden is as hospitable to them as possible. That’s my excuse for not keeping it pristine anyway.

DM says the temperature in France is on the mid-30s and he’s getting fried. I’m glad to have the respite of the cool house and shade in the garden.

I’m off to do supper now…..clafoutis, tabbouleh and salad – yum. I’m obsessing about food at the moment, boning up on my food photography for a competition I’m planning to enter. I’m researching my cookery books religiously and it’s making me itch to get in the kitchen. Happy as a pig in muck as they say!!!

Two gorgeous women were my subjects last year and two years ago my love and I were having a romantic night out!

OMG that ice cream sounds delicious! I better go find something to eat before I get into all sorts of caloric calamities.

Sparrows are rare here too... seen about 2 in three years. We could definitely do with some kind of pigeon hawk though :-)

I know what you mean not to have the camera when the wildlife comes to visit. Nice when the subject comes to you. Put your feet up and relax ....

thats a very brave sparrow, trying to look like he belongs amongst the much bigger birds!... phew what a scorcher, as someone once said
