14th June 2005 - within an arm's length of desire

Yesterday’s photo has been bugging me all day – did I really post a shot of a can of Coke? Yep – no matter how many times I think about it, that’s exactly what I did and it sticks in my gullet.

So, to redress the balance and post a photo that did justice to the title so here is a photo that was inspired from a number of different sources. Firstly DMs wonderful shot of Ewan yesterday, secondly the title of yesterday’s pic, which was an old slogan for Coke.

The third source of inspiration was a fantastic nude portrait by Bill Brandt that I saw at the exhibition of his work at the V&A last summer. You may have seen it – it’s a woman, naked down to the waist, sitting at a table. There is no-one else in the shot but there is a pair of ghostly arms embracing her. It’s a wonderful image. For anyone with the Thames and Hudson book 'Brandt - the photography of Brandt' it is the image on p241, titled 217 Campden Hill 1956.

I interpreted the photo as someone watching over and looking after another person who is exposed and vulnerable. I’ve pondered and pondered over how the shot was achieved – there is no sign of any other body parts and I can’t see how the rest of the embracer could have been hidden behind the torso of the woman. I’ve looked at it until I’m dizzy with wondering. I really love it. It was one of my favourite shots from the whole exhibition.

So, here is the person who gives me the hots….as well as a feeling of watching over me and looking after me to make sure I come to no harm, in a ‘remake’ of yesterday’s title! Dontcha just love him? Hee hee - I called this pic 'buttsmall' and it is small but beautifully formed isn't it?

Two years ago, I was flummoxed because a big hero of mine had lost it - why is that when Levi Stubbs sounds as good in modern recording as he did in his hayday? Last year, I was loving having DM home.

Like Northstar37 I thought of the Asda ad, the place where Sharon Osbourne shops.
(Anybody who believes that needs their arse slapping)
