21st November 2004 - a great reward

We've made great inroads to getting our little home in Cornwall renovated now. There has been a sudden flurry of activity meaning we now have that don't fill our next-door neighbours' house with smoke, the roof has been replaced so the very fabric of the house is no longer being undermined by water coming through the roof and the wiring has been replaced so we're no longer in danger of electrocution when we shower.

The stove's non-appearance was due in part to the shoddy workmanship of some long-ago workers who replaced the chimney stack and threw the rubble down inside the chimneys so they didn't have to bother taking it away! That held up the job then the stove itself didn't arrive from the suppliers in time. That will be fixed this week and next week the new windows and doors go in. We're hoping that by Christmas we're going to be warm and much more comfortable. Cool.

Our weekend has been filled with chores in as much as we've been cleaning granite, floors, walls and surfaces. We've also been back and forth to the dump with our car stuffed to the gills with rubbish left by our predecessors and workmen alike. But, we're really pleased with the progress we and the builders have made.

So our reward to ourselves was a long trudge over the moors with the dogs to blow some of the dust out of our lungs and pores. We're no strangers to living in building sites - both DM and I have done it before but it never gets any less miserable while you're in the process of doing this sort of work. We are at least fortunate this time to be able to close the door on it for a while and go back to some 'home comforts'. I'm really looking forward to a long soak in the bath later!

The weather has been really pretty good, very clear and no rain but unfortunately it has been very gloomy all day so taking photos has been difficult.

Our route took us past a granite quarry which could well have been the quarry that supplied the granite for our house. There are three in the area and this is the closest to our house so there is a strong chance that its stone was used in the building of our new (old) home. We believe they stopped working these quarries when the mines closed in the late 1800s and there is a spooky feel to them now.

Although it's by no means littered with the paraphernalia of quarrying, there are nonetheless quite a few bits of nineteenth century machinery strewn around still, red with rust and slowly rotting away.I've thought about it as a pic of the day before but not yet used one of the shots. I kind of like this one though.

The water looks so clear, how far down can you see? The rust tones are so nice against the green.

Neat find. I like the dof and colors on this.

I love this. Looks like you keep on turning corners on your walk and you find another antiquity.
