The guards at Buckingham Palace are really ceremonial only. They wear these huge hats made from bearskin and are not allowed to move whilst on duty. People over the years have tried to make them laugh and move but it's strictly forbidden.
Of course their swords wouldn't stop a modern day attack so we have real police with guns hidden away to do the real protection.
