This tree, and the flowers beneath, are in Fairoak Lane in Surrey (I forget the name of the village). I'm not a fan of roadside floral tributes to the dead...who I'm sure it's nicer to remember in happier surroundings. They're usually a few cheap supermarket flowers still in their plastic wrappings that eventually die and someone eventually clears them away.
This is different.
These are the flowers as a tribute to someone very loved indeed. I know that because someone tends this spot, bringing fresh displays of flowers, sometimes cut, sometimes planted like these, regularly....no, not regularly, fastidiously....I have worked for my current company for ten years and the flowers have been replaced every week for every one of those ten years. It's a mystery.
The person who leaves them must have loved the person who died so much. Every time I pass I'm tormented that the person leaving the flowers can't move on and rebuild their own life. I do so hope I'm wrong. There is too much sadness and loneliness in the world.
Whoever you are, I hope you have peace and some sort of happiness in your life.
