1st March 2009 - paradise regained

Those trees, brought home yesterday from the nursery spent their first night on Cornish soil in the back of the car. I know that’s not a great plan but to be honest, we both felt it was the right thing to do after a day trip out.

This morning then, they needed to be planted.

By the time this shot was taken, all three were planted although only one of today’s trees is visible in this shot – the little one with the orange tie is the Quince. It’s a “Vranja” for anyone who cares. That’s Geoff (Hamilton) still influencing my gardening from beyond the grave. He always swore by “Vranja” so what was good enough for him is certainly good enough for me.

While I was ferrying a watering can back and forth to give them a good soaking in, I realised that there could be no nicer spot to be planting my trees than this, so I decided to make my pic for today one of the view from my mini-orchard. It’s looking eastwards across the Tamar valley towards Devon. The hills in the background are the hills and tors of Dartmoor.

The valley in-between here and there was once full of orchards. The sight of them all in bloom in the spring was enough to make people travel down from London by train to see them at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries. They were almost all grubbed up to make way for meat, wheat and potatoes in the war.

It’s a silly dream I know but I want to put a little orchard back, even though mine is a bit too high on the moor really. It remains to be seen as to whether or not we get good crops here.

Every so often, it's good to remind myself that even though I sometimes feel "lost" that I have, in fact, managed to regain my paradise.

beautiful picture and beautiful idea to recreate an orchard. But didn't you once say that there was a footpath along the east edge of your property. ? Beware of apple rustlers

This certainly looks like paradise. I bet it's wonderful in spring and summer.

I have 20 acres in Upstate NY that I've spent the last 10 years replanting with heirloom apple, pear and nut trees- more for the animals and birds than for me. You're doing a good thing!
