6th February 2009 - up to our necks in it

This is my moon gazing hare, staring up at the sky from a blanket of snow. He’s up to his neck in snow and so are we. We reckon around 18” (didn’t we tell you how short we are) has fallen here overnight – I’m not entirely certain but I’d say it’s unprecedented – certainly it is since we’ve lived here.

It wasn’t forecast – we had no bad weather warning and no warning of snow, so when I opened the door to let Rosie out last thing last night, I was shocked to see the white stuff everywhere.

There followed a fretful night. Thunder and lightening keeping us awake and lighting up the sky and me fretting about how I would get to my two job interviews today. I missed one (but so did the interviewer) and managed, by the skin of my teeth, to get to the other. Phew.

In the night, we heard only one vehicle on the road – this morning we found it abandoned a couple of metres further up the hill. At first light, we heard a neighbour set off for work and return home ten minutes later!

Stressed is how I now feel, but glad to close the door and “pull up the drawbridge” on this day. What will tomorrow bring? Who knows, let’s hope it’s not another white-out although I suspect that’s exactly what we’re going to get.

Snow is a pain when it means you can't get where you need to be... but then if everyone else is in the same boat all you can do is relax & enjoy how beautiful & fresh & clean it makes everything look... well till it turns to slush, anyway! ;O) The kids & I have made some lovely memories in the most snow they've ever seen this last week...

18" isn't a lot of snow if you own snowblowers and the council owns a fleet of snowplows. Since its a pretty sure guess that no one in England has ever seen a snowblower in a store, and the council wouldn't dream of buying a plow, 18" is a real problem. Since I'm in Florida where 55ºF produces the same media panic as 18" of snow, I sympathise.
