Tandayapa Lodge, Quito, Ecuador

Andean Emerald & Green Crowned Brilliant

The Andean Emerald (Amazilia franciae) is a species of hummingbird found at forest edge, woodland, gardens and scrub in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru. It is generally fairly common. It is green above and white below.

The Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula) is a large robust hummingbird that is a resident breeder in the highlands from Costa Rica to western Ecuador. This hummingbird inhabits wet mountain forests including edges, gaps and tall second growth. It occurs typically between 700 m and 2000 m in altitude, mainly on the Caribbean slopes.

It's hard to imagine these tiny birds fighting but I've seen them do it. Wonderful capture of this combative pair. V.
