Bald Knight
Melanoleucas are saprobes, typically found in grass or grassy places in forests. There is considerable confusion in nomenclature for the Melanoleucas, with numerous synonyms existing for this species. It is a smooth-surfaced brown to dark brown species with a low humpo or umbo, reaching several inches in cap width. The stalks are a lighter shade of the cap, cylindrical, solid and lacking an annulus. Gills are crowded, with notched attachment and a bright white in color that contrasts sharply with the darkish brown of the cap. They drop a white spore print. The odor in indistinct and the taste mild. They are considered edible but with little to recommend them.
