Hortiboletus bubalinus

Tacoma, Washington

Ascot Hat
In the family Boletaceae, this rather small bolete may be encountered in parks and gardens under poplars, willow, cottonwoods, lime or several other ornamental trees. It rarely is more than 2-2.5 inches across. The caps are light brown with red tints, and lighter at the margins. The pores are yellow and bruise blue as shown in the image. The stalks have feature red streaking over a pale yellowish ground. The red tones of the fungus are often more subdued than in this fresh young exemplar. It is most likely to be confused with various Xerocomellus species. Though H. bubalinus is not often encountered in the PNW it is a good edible.
