Collybia cirrhata

Silver Springs Campground, Hwy 410, Washington

A seldom-photographed but widespread species this dainty fungus is shown several times actual size, with caps in actuality 0.5-1mm broad and stems up to 25mm. The fungus is parasitic on decaying remains of other fungi, especially decaying Russulas. But in this case it is feeding on decaying Ganoderma oregonensis. The caps are dry and whitish with pinkish tones and the stalks are light orange. Note the thick mycelium at the base with several white rhizomes protruding. This Collybia, unlike other small parasitic Collybias, does not grow from a seed-like sclerotium. It drops a white spore print. There is no odor. It is much too small for table fare.
