Sepia: Challenging the Icon

I thought it would be fun to create an image that is the antithesis of what I often think of when I think of sepia. A processesing from the 1800s, those gold toned sepia images, and others from the time, were most often formal portraits (part of that was the limitations of the camera).

Unlike the usual formality found in older sepia images, this image has a strikingly private feel to it...a man and a woman in the bedroom, yet perhaps more shocking than looking into their bedroom is the suggestion of a lack of intimacy; he reads on his computer and her back is turned to him (don't read more into this "self portrait with significant other", I was just playing with creating emotions using some of the "effects" in the mac's "photo booth" app).

I shot the image using the THERMAL effect, then converted it to SEPIA and placed a VIGNETTE effect on the edges as well.

This image was created for the Totally Informal Transglobal Challenge. The theme for this Thursday, November 5, is "sepia". For other participants responses, or to post your own, click here: http://form.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=42618

Excellent thinking and I am not a big fan of sepia, this challenge is giving a different perspective to the colors.

Oh, I like this. Like in homes all over the world. We need to realize how life passes so quickly and must do more things together. Excellent job on this!

Outstanding photo. Superb counterpoint between what is almost certainly a time for intimacy broken by the cold indifference of the computer. But then, we don't know what's on the screen... Very well done!

I agree, a fascinating concept behind this composition. For me it evokes Rattigan's "Look back in anger" from the 1960's.
