GREAT HORNED OWL (Bubo virginianus)

Wildlife Rescue/Palmer Ranch

The name of this species is derived from tufts of feathers that appear to be "horns" and are sometimes referred to as "ear tufts" but have nothing to do with hearing. Females are 10 to 20% larger than males, having wingspans up to 60 inches.
