El Palacio de Correos de México (the Postal Palace of Mexico City) is also know as la Quinta Casa de Correos (the Fifth Postal House), and also as el Correo Mayor (the Main Post Office). In 1901, la Dirección General de Correos (the General Postal Administration) was spun off as a new separate government agency. The location chosen to house the agency and the main post office was occupied by the old Hospital de Terceros de San Francisco (Hospital of the Third Order of Saint Francis). The hospital was destroyed in 1902 and construction began.

The Italian architect Adamo Boardi (1863-1928) was chosen for the project. The design is electric, yet Boardi’s design pulls the various styles used together. The military engineer Gonzalo Garita y Frontera supervised the construction. During the 1950s, parts of the building were taken over by the adjacent Bank of Mexico which made modifications that not only destroyed portions of the building, but also weaken it. The building was severely damaged by the 1985 earthquake. The building was later declared a artistic monument and restoration work began. Boardi's daughter was located in Italy and her father's plans and notes aided the restoration.
