An interesting moth larva, which was found feeding on Glossy Buckthorn, a serious invasive plant of woods and roadsides. This moth species mainly occurs in the southern US but apparently migrates northward at times to southern Ontario, New Brunswick, and other locations far out of its range. There were hundreds upon hundreds of defoliated buckthorn and although we saw only about 45 larvae, it was evident many more had been feeding. Can they overwinter as pupae? Or is this a very occasional occurrence of a big influx of females laying eggs? I was alerted to this species by a person who works in the forest.
