According to Bug Guide "Larvae feed in decaying stumps and roots of oak, linden, and maple." This is one of the stag beetles (family Lucanidae).

Wow a lovely image from these amazing beetle, for so much that we can observe here and get into nature it seems to be a good insect year, notwithstanding that we are again struggling here with a very dry period, and this early in the season, great work Christine BV
