Giant water bug (Lethocerus americanus)

At home

I've set out my lights several times since this big insect came to visit, but haven't seen another one. Although aquatic, they have a habit of flying around at night and often come to lights. This may be a female, as it was quite large, 3 inches perhaps.

I wouldn't want to encounter this at night, or at any time for that matter, but great capture of it in any case. V.

These are impressive bugs and from what I've heard can deliver a very nasty bite. So last week when one was at my lights and flying around, I moved away so it didn't land on me.
