I decided to search for monarch butterfly caterpillars early this morning in Larose Forest, when I saw an abundance of milkweed along one of the forest roads. I was not really expecting to find any as monarchs have been scarce to absent. But in the end, I found 8 caterpillars and one female butterfly! A very reassuring experience given how precipitously low their population is at present.
