Mourning cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa)

Reveler Conservation Area

With its wings closed, this butterfly looks like it could be a dead leaf. It is on a tree riddled with Sapsucker holes and lapping sap voraciously. Several other mourning cloaks and some commas were also doing the same thing on the tree.

It is sort of difficult to recognize this as a butterfly. Amazing you were able to see it and get this great capture. V.
