Summer azure butterfly larva (Celastrina neglecta)

Reveler Conservation Area

Looking at a dogwood shrub I saw an ant busily probing something on the dried out flower head. It turned out to be a tiny larva of the summer azure butterfly. I was amazed at how well it blended into the flower head in terms of shape and colour. To see the butterfly this becomes: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/151252784

It does look to be part of the flower, but what a difference from what it will become! Outstanding detail, Christine. V.
