Treehopper (Publilia) with eggs and ant

Reveler Conservation Area

Several of these very small treehoppers (probably P.concava) were on goldenrod stems sitting on eggs. Ants were tending them, as there is a mutually beneficial association between the treehoppers and ants. The ants like the 'honeydew' the treehoppers excrete and in return they fiercely protect the hoppers from predation (or try to).
