I found this gigantic beauty in my garden the other morning early. It looked enormous perched with its wings spread out, probably 5 inches across. A few years ago, this species was only very rarely found in this region, though it is common closer to Toronto. Then, in 2012, it began turning up in many locations and even bred and now it appears to overwinter here. Prickly ash, one of its larval host plants, is pretty common here now and hence, lots of places for the females to lay their eggs.
